European lawmaker Karin Karlsbro emphasizes the need for action over words when dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump’s ongoing threats to take control of Greenland have sparked opposition from European leaders, including Denmark and other EU countries. The majority of Greenland’s population and Denmark reject U.S. control of the autonomous territory.
In response to Trump’s tariff threats against EU countries opposing his Greenland ambitions, the EU is considering retaliatory measures, including the use of the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), nicknamed the “trade bazooka.” This instrument could lead to restrictions on trade, investments, and public tenders.
While EU members are divided on employing the “bazooka,” Karlsbro advocates for its use, emphasizing the need to send a strong message to Trump. The ACI acts as a deterrent against U.S. coercion, enabling the EU to respond collectively to economic threats. This approach mirrors NATO’s principle of collective defense.
Despite mixed reactions from some EU leaders, Karlsbro believes in the EU’s ability to stand united in support of Denmark and Greenland. The potential impact of the trade bazooka on the U.S. economy could target sensitive sectors, challenging Trump’s tariff-centric economic policies.
Concerns about potential escalation by Trump are met with the argument that inaction could lead to further aggression. By utilizing the ACI, the EU aims to demonstrate its willingness to defend against external pressures and uphold global order without resorting to violence.
The possibility of sending troops to Greenland, as suggested by Canadian officials, remains a topic of discussion. Karlsbro stresses the importance of cooperation among EU members and allies to strengthen their position.
Regarding Trump’s motivations, including speculations about his Nobel Peace Prize aspirations, Karlsbro dismisses such claims as unfounded. She acknowledges the seriousness of Trump’s statements and emphasizes the need for a firm, unified response to safeguard international norms and stability.
