EU Commission President Hails Hungary Election Upset

European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Hungary’s recent election as a significant win for basic freedoms. She likened the removal of nationalist Viktor Orbán to pivotal moments in Hungarian history, such as the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising and the 1989 break from communism.

The center-right opposition, led by Péter Magyar, secured a landslide victory, causing a political upheaval that resonated globally. Von der Leyen commended the Hungarian people for their courage and determination, drawing parallels to past acts of defiance against oppressive forces.

Orbán, a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin within the EU, often clashed with Western allies, impeding support for Ukraine. His recent actions, including blocking a substantial EU loan to Ukraine, strained diplomatic relations.

Magyar, a former member of Orbán’s party, emphasized Hungary’s shift towards a pro-European stance following the election. While expressing readiness for constructive dialogue with Putin, he made it clear that his government would not advocate for Ukraine’s swift EU accession.

The victory of Magyar’s coalition was lauded by European leaders who had faced challenges dealing with Orbán’s administration. International figures, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, hailed the triumph as a win for democracy.

Despite the support Orbán received from the Trump administration, Magyar’s win was welcomed by liberals and moderate conservatives worldwide. The transition of power in Hungary was seen as a rebuke to authoritarian tendencies and foreign interference.

Moving forward, Hungary’s new leadership under Magyar is poised to shape its future course, with efforts to strengthen ties with European allies and promote cooperation in various areas. The international community has expressed respect for Hungary’s democratic choice and anticipates ongoing pragmatic engagement with the country’s new leadership.
