“Early Brush Fires Spark Fire Ban in Newfoundland”

Brush fires have been reported on Newfoundland’s Bay de Verde Peninsula, prompting the Heart’s Content Volunteer Fire Department to impose a fire ban in their community and New Perlican, even though wildfire season has not yet begun. Heart’s Content fire chief Kyle Piercey expressed the desire to prevent a repeat of last year’s devastating wildfire season, which saw multiple wildfires spiral out of control, leading to evacuations and the destruction of numerous structures in the region.

Bay Roberts Fire Rescue recently responded to a brush fire in Port de Grave that spread over a significant area and posed a threat to nearby homes. According to Bay Roberts fire chief Michael Murphy, the fire originated from a barrel fire that escalated beyond control. Several fire departments in Conception Bay have already dealt with multiple brush fires this month, some of which were also ignited by barrel fires.

Piercey took action to enforce the fire ban upon learning about the brush fires and close calls in neighboring areas. He emphasized the decision was made due to the local weather conditions, leading to the prohibition of all brush fires and open pit fires while allowing the use of propane barbecues and fireplaces. The ban will remain in effect until further notice, and Piercey advised individuals seeking to burn brush to obtain a permit from the provincial forestry department.

Concerns about the upcoming wildfire season have heightened, prompting proactive measures to ensure safety. Mayor Glenda Hiscock vividly recalls the wildfire that approached within 10 kilometers of Heart’s Content, describing it as a frightening experience. She commended the dedication of volunteer firefighters across Conception Bay North, highlighting their sacrifices to protect communities during last year’s wildfires. Hiscock stressed the importance of being proactive this year, emphasizing the significance of safety in light of the previous year’s events.
