At a Canadian media production industry conference in Ottawa, the creators of the popular Canadian TV series “Heated Rivalry” voiced their support for the Online Streaming Act, which has been flagged as a trade concern by the United States. Jacob Tierney, the show’s creator, emphasized the importance of retaining the act, stating that losing it would be detrimental.
“Heated Rivalry,” initially produced for Bell Media’s Crave streaming service and later acquired by HBO Max, has achieved worldwide success. The lead actors have graced prestigious events such as the Golden Globes, U.S. late-night talk shows, and Milan Fashion Week.
This week’s Prime Time media production conference in Ottawa witnessed a significant influx of star power due to the show’s presence. Tierney expressed that requiring significant foreign platforms to contribute five percent towards Canadian content is a reasonable expectation, despite ongoing legal challenges from these platforms.
Brendan Brady, another creative force behind “Heated Rivalry,” encouraged streamers to embrace the opportunity to compete within the Canadian system. He highlighted the potential for global platforms to foster more content like “Heated Rivalry,” urging them to view it as a positive development.
The annual industry conference coincides with global streamers contesting Canadian content regulations imposed by the CRTC through the Online Streaming Act. The legislation was designed to modernize broadcasting laws to encompass online platforms like Netflix.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has raised concerns about the legislation’s impact on American digital service providers ahead of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement review. Additionally, Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon assured creators that their feedback on the Online Streaming Act is valued.
The CRTC’s directive for large foreign streaming companies to allocate five percent of their Canadian revenues to support Canadian content has faced opposition in the Federal Court, leading to a temporary halt on payments. These companies have also challenged a CRTC decision mandating the disclosure of financial information.
The ongoing discussions at the conference underscore the industry’s evolving landscape and the challenges posed by the intersection of content creation, distribution, and regulatory frameworks.
