Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Jamil Jivani revealed that he held discussions with officials from the Trump administration during his recent visit to Washington, aiming to enhance trade relations between Canada and the United States. Jivani conveyed a message from U.S. President Donald Trump expressing his affection for Canadians. Despite Jivani’s attempts to collaborate with the Liberal government before his trip, he received no response.
In a social media video, Jivani emphasized his willingness to facilitate communication between the two nations. While acknowledging that Jivani was briefed by Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed the ongoing communication between the Liberal government and the U.S. administration.
Jivani mentioned his plans to meet with representatives from General Motors and other industry leaders during his visit. He also intends to participate in the National Prayer Breakfast, a significant annual event in Washington. Jivani’s unique connection with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, stemming from their time at Yale Law School, sets him apart as a valuable intermediary.
Jivani reached out to the Prime Minister and key Liberal Members of Parliament (MPs) via email, offering his assistance in alignment with the government’s objectives. He underscored the importance of unity between Conservatives and Liberals for the mutual benefit of Canada. Conservative MP Gérard Deltell expressed his party’s readiness to support the Liberal government in its negotiations with the Trump administration.
Moreover, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre emphasized the need for MPs to advocate for local job preservation, particularly in light of recent GM layoffs. Jivani aims to raise awareness about job losses in his community to U.S. stakeholders. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly expressed skepticism regarding Jivani’s approach, urging him to address the challenges faced by Canadian workers impacted by American tariffs.
