Nova Scotia RCMP reported that a 13-year-old boy, Drew Nickerson, was tragically killed in an attack involving three large-breed dogs – a Rottweiler and two Cane Corsos near Shelburne, N.S. The incident occurred while Nickerson was riding his bike near his home on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown, about 12 kilometers north of Shelburne. Staff Sgt. Mark MacPherson mentioned that the dogs ran onto the road as Nickerson was cycling, with video footage of the attack being obtained from a nearby residence.
MacPherson stated that the dogs were off their owner’s property during the attack, and one of the dog owners drove Nickerson to the hospital due to the severity of his injuries. There is ongoing investigation to understand the circumstances leading to the attack. The RCMP, conducting thorough investigations, mentioned that the dog owners have been cooperative. The dogs involved in the attack were euthanized by a veterinarian.
The tragic incident has deeply affected Shelburne County, with the community rallying support for Nickerson’s family. Fisherman Conway Hutt initiated a fundraising raffle to support the family, receiving generous contributions from community members. An online fundraising campaign for Drew’s mother has also garnered significant support, raising nearly $50,000 with numerous donations. The family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support during this difficult time.
Drew, a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School, was known for his love of horses, outdoor activities, and his passion for soccer. His family and community remember him for his bright smile, kindness, sense of humor, and the joy he brought to those around him.
