The introduction of Lyme disease in southern Ontario in 1989 marked the initial presence of blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks, in Canada. These ticks, capable of transmitting Lyme disease and in rare cases Powassan virus, have since spread to all other provinces, including Alberta and Saskatchewan. Canada currently hosts over 40 tick species, some of which pose significant health risks, as reported by Health Canada.
Notably, the lone star tick, known for causing a severe red meat allergy in humans, and the Asian longhorned tick, which poses a threat to cattle, have been identified in parts of Canada. Researchers suggest that the increasing tick population in Canada is driven by climate change, enabling these parasites to survive and proliferate in previously inhospitable environments.
The escalation of ticks in Canada, though surprising to some, has been attributed to climate change trends favoring tick survival and migration. As a result, Canadians are urged to adopt preventive measures when engaging in outdoor activities to minimize exposure to ticks. These measures include wearing protective clothing, utilizing insect repellent, and conducting thorough tick checks after being outdoors.
