“China Showcases Cutting-Edge Humanoid Robots at Spring Gala”

China’s highly anticipated annual CCTV Spring Festival gala unveiled the nation’s advanced industrial strategies and Beijing’s ambition to lead in humanoid robots and future manufacturing. The event featured presentations from four emerging humanoid robot startups – Unitree Robotics, Galbot, Noetix, and MagicLab – showcasing their innovative products. This gala, akin to the Super Bowl in the United States, showcased humanoid robots in various performances, including a martial arts demonstration with Unitree humanoids engaging in intricate fight sequences alongside human performers.

The program highlighted the technical prowess of these robots, with one sequence emulating China’s unique “drunken boxing” martial arts style, displaying advancements in multi-robot coordination and fault recovery capabilities. Additionally, Bytedance’s AI chatbot Doubao was featured, along with comedic skits involving Noetix robots and synchronized dances with human performers by MagicLab robots during the performance of the song “We Are Made in China.”

The buzz surrounding China’s humanoid robot sector is growing as major players like AgiBot and Unitree gear up for initial public offerings this year. Concurrently, domestic AI startups are set to unveil cutting-edge models during the lucrative Lunar New Year holiday. Last year’s gala amazed viewers with 16 full-size Unitree humanoids dancing in harmony with human participants, leading to the founder’s meeting with President Xi Jinping at a tech symposium.

President Xi’s interactions with robotics startup founders underscore China’s commitment to this sector, evident in his engagements with similar sectors like electric vehicles and semiconductors. The gala, which captivated 79% of China’s live TV audience last year, has long been a platform to showcase Beijing’s technological aspirations, including space programs, drones, and robotics. Experts note that the gala acts as a conduit from industrial policy to mainstream entertainment, offering companies exposure and potential benefits such as government contracts and investor interest.

China’s strategic focus on robotics and AI in its manufacturing strategy aligns with its vision for AI+ manufacturing, aiming to enhance productivity amid demographic challenges. China’s dominance in humanoid robot production was evident last year, accounting for 90% of global shipments. Projections suggest a significant increase in humanoid robot sales in China this year, with Elon Musk acknowledging China’s formidable presence in the industry as Tesla shifts focus towards embodied AI and its flagship humanoid Optimus.
