A puzzle in Squamish, B.C., has been unraveled as the disappearance of a cherished granite rock used by climbers last autumn has been resolved. Referred to as Portable, the rock was adored by locals for its ideal shape and size, perfect for enhancing balance and grip skills.
The rock, a long-standing fixture in the Squamish community, held sentimental value for many climbers. Ethan Salvo, a 23-year-old climber, expressed his attachment to Portable, emphasizing its significance as a playful challenge and a symbol of affection for nature among climbers.
Following its sudden disappearance, the community was dismayed by the absence of Portable, considering its sentimental value. However, the rock has now been located in Bishop, Calif., much to the surprise of local climbers.
Salvo, while on a climbing expedition, spotted a photo online that led him to the missing rock just a short distance from his campsite. Recognizable by its distinctive features, including a Canadian drinking toque, goggles, and a stylish hat, Portable was identified and retrieved by Salvo’s friend.
Upon reuniting with Portable, Salvo’s immediate recognition of the rock confirmed its authenticity to him, attributing it to the unique connection climbers have with their surroundings. Speculating on how Portable ended up in California, Salvo believes a visitor to Squamish unintentionally took it, unaware of the impact on the community.
Salvo plans to return Portable to its original spot at the base of the Superfly boulder in Squamish, concluding the unexpected journey of the beloved rock.
