Vizsla Silver Corp.’s employees toiled in a challenging environment plagued by gunfire, cartel roadblocks, and surveillance drones, according to the sibling of a geologist with the Canadian mining firm in Mexico, who was among the five individuals discovered deceased after being abducted by a suspected faction of the Sinaloa cartel.
Attorney Jaime Castañeda revealed that his brother, José Manuel Castañeda Hernández, recounted gunfights erupting near the company’s exploration sites in the rugged, mountainous terrain of Sinaloa. Castañeda added that his brother also mentioned hearing gunfire in the evenings and at night while staying in a secured residential compound in Concordia, a town approximately 50 kilometers east of Mazatlán.
José Manuel Castañeda Hernández, aged 43, was part of a group of 10 workers, including geologists, engineers, and security personnel, who were taken captive on January 23 in Concordia. The Mexican Attorney General’s Office confirmed that five of the abducted men have been identified as employees of Vizsla Silver, a Vancouver-based company operating in Sinaloa since around 2019.
The abductions occurred amidst escalating violence in Sinaloa, driven by a prolonged internal conflict within the Sinaloa cartel, a prominent drug trafficking organization. The clashes between rival factions within the cartel have resulted in numerous casualties and disappearances in the region.
Mexican security experts indicated that a rival faction, La Mayiza, had recently displaced Los Chapitos from the area where Vizsla Silver was operating. The motive behind the kidnappings remains unclear, with authorities investigating various theories, including the possibility of mistaken identity.
Vizsla Silver responded to the incident by emphasizing its commitment to safety and support for affected families, stating that it had implemented robust security measures and enlisted experienced advisors. The company vowed to cooperate with authorities and uphold ethical standards in its operations.
