Canada’s Hayley McDonald Nets Hat Trick in U-18 Warm-Up

Hayley McDonald marked her 18th birthday by scoring three goals. The forward from East St. Paul, Manitoba, played a key role in Canada’s 11-0 victory over Finland in the Under-18 Women’s World Championship warm-up match in Halifax this week. Not only is McDonald a skilled offensive player, but she also serves as a quiet leader for the team, aiming to help Canada secure consecutive gold medals for the first time since 2022-23.

According to head coach Vicky Sunohara, McDonald embodies determination and passion, always putting the team’s interests first. Canada will kick off its title defense against Switzerland on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET in Membertou, Nova Scotia, where the tournament is being co-hosted with Sydney in Cape Breton. The gold medal match is scheduled for January 18.

McDonald is among the nine returning players from the squad that clinched victory over the United States in the previous year’s final. Sunohara emphasizes the team’s depth, comprising a balanced mix of experienced players and newcomers, with a focus on collective contributions from all four lines rather than relying on individual stars.

Although there has been limited time for the team to bond, Sunohara is pleased with the unity and effective communication among the players. The leadership group, led by Sunohara, is committed to supporting and guiding the new members, creating a welcoming and cohesive team environment.

Among the returning players is Caileigh Tiller, who made significant contributions in last year’s tournament, including scoring the decisive goal in the final against the U.S. This year, Tiller will be joined by her twin sister, Chelsea, who plays as a defenseman for Team Canada.

Playing close to their hometowns, three Maritimers will make their debut for Team Canada: Kendall Doiron, Jaylee MacKinnon, and Megan Mossey. These players played crucial roles in Team Atlantic’s impressive journey to the final at the Under-18 Nationals last year, setting a significant milestone for the Atlantic region in the championship.

Doiron, recognized as the top forward in the previous tournament, expressed her excitement at representing the national team, especially in front of local fans and family. Her experience with Team Atlantic has prepared her to assume leadership roles, which has been acknowledged by Hockey Canada for her all-around performance and consistency on the ice.

The Canadian team’s goaltenders, Maija St-Pierre, Rowan Houweling, and Léa-Rose Charrois, are new additions, each bringing their unique skills and achievements to the team. The challenge of facing the United States, the top rival, looms large for Canada as they aim to defend their title. Sunohara highlighted the need for defensive improvements, especially against the strong offensive capabilities of the American team.

The road to another championship title will not be easy, with potential strong contenders like the Czech Republic and Slovakia, led by standout player Nela Lopušanová. Sunohara emphasized the team’s focus on continuous improvement and self-development, believing that their dedication and teamwork will lead to success on the ice.
