Canada’s Carney Condemns Trump’s Greenland Tariff Threats

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed Canada’s apprehension regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of imposing escalating tariffs on several European nations until they agree to his demand to purchase and govern Greenland. Addressing reporters in Doha, Qatar, Carney stated, “We’re troubled by this escalation. We consistently advocate for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations regardless of their geographical location.” He emphasized that decisions concerning the future of Greenland should be made by Greenland and Denmark.

Trump, through a social media post, announced that countries including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland could face a 10% tariff, which would increase to 25% by June 1 if the U.S. does not secure a deal to acquire the semi-autonomous island. The mentioned European countries stood by Denmark, cautioning that a U.S. military takeover of a territory within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) could jeopardize the military alliance led by Washington.

In a joint statement released by the eight European nations, they affirmed full solidarity with the people of Greenland and expressed readiness for dialogues based on principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. They criticized the tariff threats for undermining transatlantic relations and potentially leading to a detrimental downward spiral.

Regarding Trump’s interest in controlling Greenland, General Jennie Carignan, chief of the Canadian Armed Forces, acknowledged that it sparks discussions within NATO. However, she remained optimistic about NATO’s resilience, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communication channels and collaborative engagement among allies.

Denmark recently announced its plans to enhance its military presence in Greenland in coordination with NATO partners. When asked about Canada’s potential contribution of forces on the ground, Carignan highlighted Canada’s ongoing collaboration with Denmark, particularly in Arctic security initiatives within NATO.

In another development, Carney received an invitation from Trump to join the “Board of Peace” overseeing the temporary governance of the Gaza Strip. While Carney initially indicated acceptance of the invitation, new revelations suggest a broader scope for the board’s operations, including a requirement for member countries to contribute $1 billion in cash.

During the press conference in Qatar, Carney disclosed Qatar’s substantial strategic investments in Canada’s major infrastructure projects. He emphasized that these investments would accelerate project completion, boost the energy sector, and generate employment opportunities for Canadians. Carney also highlighted plans to strengthen cultural ties between Canada and Qatar, facilitating increased tourism and business activities through expanded direct flights.

The bilateral relations between Canada and Qatar are poised to enter a new phase, featuring enhanced cooperation in various sectors, including culture, trade, and defense. Carney concluded his overseas trip by attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, after emphasizing the importance of fostering mutual trust and collaboration between nations.
