Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a routine almost four years ago until her brother suggested she channel her passion for K-pop and BTS into a positive outlet. Following his advice, Vann established BTS Army Toronto, a local fan club that organizes events and meet-ups to unite fans of the popular South Korean boy band. Despite facing personal loss when her brother passed away shortly after founding the club, Vann, now 43, continued to expand the community, hosting fan gatherings, organizing charity events, and supporting local Korean businesses.
As BTS prepares for their highly anticipated return to Toronto after more than a decade, Vann, along with her 24-year-old son Jordan and a team of around 10 members, is excited about the upcoming concerts. She emphasized the rewarding friendships and connections that have blossomed within the community, fueled by a shared love for music and the band.
BTS, as part of their Arirang World Tour, will perform sold-out shows at Rogers Stadium over the weekend, entertaining an estimated 100,000 fans across two nights. Known for their devoted fan base, BTS enthusiasts exhibit profound knowledge of the band’s history, members, and music catalog, using terms like “army” and “bias” to express their fandom.
Vann attributed fans’ unwavering dedication to BTS’s meaningful music, touching on themes like mental health and personal growth. She praised the band’s commitment to creating impactful music that resonates with listeners, leading her to venture into a new business called Idol Konnect, offering services to K-pop artists.
Before their current tour, BTS took a hiatus to fulfill mandatory military service requirements in South Korea. Their stop in north Toronto marks their only Canadian appearance on the global tour spanning 88 shows across 34 cities in 23 countries through March 2027.
The thriving interest in BTS reflects their transformation from underdogs to global superstars since their debut in 2013. Their album “ARIRANG” topped the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S., achieving significant sales figures and solidifying their status in the music industry.
