In the southeastern mountains of British Columbia, a company that has been engaged in bitcoin mining since 2018 is now planning to convert its operation in Christina Lake into an artificial intelligence data center. DMG Blockchain Solutions recently announced a letter of intent to supply AI data center processing power from its Christina Lake site to an undisclosed tenant.
Grace McGregor, a director with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary representing Christina Lake, expressed concerns about DMG Blockchain Solutions, describing them as problematic neighbors due to unresolved bylaw violations. McGregor highlighted frustrations from residents and local officials, stating that attempts to communicate with the company have been unproductive.
The company intends to equip its existing bitcoin mining facility with servers and cooling systems to support the AI data center operation. DMG Blockchain Solutions plans to lease out its servers and bandwidth to an unnamed AI company, with the aim of commencing operations by the end of the year.
McGregor raised environmental worries regarding the impact of the facility transformation on the local water table and community. In response, Sheldon Bennett, CEO of DMG Blockchain Solutions, assured that the company is open to public hearings and has engaged with federal authorities to address environmental concerns, emphasizing the use of water-efficient technology in the data center’s cooling systems.
Regarding regulatory compliance, McGregor highlighted ongoing issues with building permits and zoning code violations by DMG Blockchain Solutions since 2018. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary issued stop-work orders and emphasized the lack of valid permits for alterations made to the property.
Despite facing enforcement actions from the regional district, DMG Blockchain Solutions expressed commitment to resolving permit issues promptly by collaborating with local authorities. Residents of Christina Lake have initiated a petition opposing the AI data center project, advocating for environmental assessments and public consultations before further renovations proceed.
The announcement in Christina Lake coincides with a federal initiative promoting sovereign AI technology, amid concerns raised by Canadian residents about the rapid growth of data centers nationwide. B.C.’s Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, Adrian Dix, emphasized stringent regulations on water and electricity usage for AI data centers, citing recent legislation limiting electricity allocation for such facilities and prohibiting additional bitcoin mining activities. Dix underscored the importance of responsible resource management during the AI expansion, urging other provinces to follow suit.
