“Bear Sightings Surge in Northwestern Ontario Amid Wildfires”

Recent bear encounters in northwestern Ontario have sparked concerns, yet the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) in the province has clarified that the number of sightings remains consistent with previous years. Micheline Mamone, the provincial co-ordinator for human/wildlife management, disclosed that the MNR has received 670 reports of bear sightings or encounters in the northwest region this summer. Mamone highlighted that although the call volume is higher compared to years with abundant food availability like 2022 and 2023, it is lower than the 701 calls recorded by September 3, 2024.

While Mamone didn’t confirm a direct link between wildfires and the recent surge in bear sightings, she acknowledged the potential impact of wildfires. Black bears tend to avoid areas affected by forest fires, moving away from burning regions or heavy smoke. Mamone explained that bears can travel considerable distances in search of food, sometimes covering over 100 kilometers from their usual habitat. Mike McIntosh, who oversees the Bear With Us sanctuary for orphaned and injured bear cubs near Huntsville, Ontario, emphasized that wildfires are indeed influencing bear behavior and movement.

According to McIntosh, wildfires force animals to move, potentially driving bears into urban areas they wouldn’t typically venture into due to food scarcity caused by fires. The destruction of natural food sources can lead bears to residential areas in search of easily accessible food, such as bird feeders. McIntosh highlighted that bears will continue roaming until they find sustenance, often lingering around locations with available food sources.

Instances of bear sightings in Thunder Bay have increased, with reports of bears in various neighborhoods prompting authorities to take action. Conservation efforts are in place in the Township of Manitouwadge, with officials reassuring residents about proactive measures being implemented, including the successful trapping and relocation of three black bears by authorized personnel following provincial guidelines.

Recent encounters, such as a bear incident at the Casque Isles Hiking Trail and police responses to aggressive bears in different areas, underline the importance of public vigilance. Lisa Lawrence, an acting Sgt. with the OPP, emphasized the seasonal factors contributing to heightened bear activity near populated regions and urged residents to secure garbage, remove outdoor food sources, and exercise caution when encountering bears.

As bears prepare for hibernation, McIntosh emphasized the significance of avoiding bear attractants like bird feeders and properly securing garbage to mitigate potential conflicts. He stressed that bear attacks on humans are rare, often triggered by off-leash dogs that provoke defensive responses from bears protecting their young. McIntosh’s insights underscore the need for responsible behavior to minimize human-bear conflicts and ensure mutual safety.

Overall, the ongoing bear encounters in northwestern Ontario serve as a reminder of the importance of coexisting responsibly with wildlife, particularly during periods of increased bear activity.
