“Bat Contact? Seek Medical Help ASAP to Prevent Rabies”

Doctors are advising individuals who come into contact with bats to promptly seek medical attention to prevent potential rabies transmission. A recent case study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal detailed the tragic death of a child due to rabies nearly two years ago.

Dr. Brian Hummel, a pediatric infectious disease physician at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton and the senior author of the case report, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about rabies infection risks. The incident involved an 11-year-old boy who encountered a bat at a cottage in northern Ontario in 2024. Despite not observing any scratches or bites on the boy’s face and assuming the bat was not behaving abnormally, the parents did not initially seek medical help.

Subsequently, the boy experienced facial tingling, numbness, and swelling, leading to a decline in his neurological condition. Despite visits to an urgent care clinic and an emergency department, the boy’s health deteriorated, and he eventually passed away with his family by his side. Once rabies symptoms manifest, treatment options are limited as there is no cure for the disease.

Rabies has a relatively long incubation period, typically lasting weeks before symptoms appear. Prompt administration of vaccines and antibodies after exposure can effectively prevent the infection. Dr. Hummel emphasized the importance of seeking medical care before symptoms develop, as symptomatic rabies infection is almost always fatal.

While rabies cases are rare in Canada, with only 28 reported since 1924, bats pose the greatest risk of transmitting the virus to humans. Physical contact with bats, which may include unnoticed bites or exposure to saliva, can result in rabies transmission. Health care providers collaborate with public health authorities to determine the need for post-exposure prophylaxis, including a series of vaccines and antibody injections.

Vaccination triggers an immune response against the rabies virus, with the first shot administered immediately and subsequent doses given over specific intervals. Possible side effects of the vaccine are generally mild and temporary, with rare occurrences of severe reactions. Despite potential risks associated with the vaccine, the benefits of preventing rabies infection far outweigh the minimal dangers.
