Organizers have postponed professional rock climber Alex Honnold’s ropeless ascent of the Taipei 101 skyscraper by 24 hours due to inclement weather conditions, they confirmed. Initially scheduled to be broadcast live on Netflix on Saturday local time, or Friday evening for U.S. viewers, Honnold’s free solo climb in Taiwan’s capital city was put on hold as rain persisted less than an hour before the anticipated start time. The climb has now been rescheduled for Sunday morning in Taiwan, with a more favorable weather forecast predicting clearer skies.
Emphasizing safety as their primary concern, Netflix announced the delay, prompting a crowd of around 100 spectators who had gathered for the event. Queenie Chang, a devoted Taiwanese fan of Honnold, expressed understanding and support for the decision to postpone the climb.
Organizers had previously acknowledged the possibility of light rain on the morning of the climb and had contingency plans in place to ensure Honnold’s safety in adverse weather conditions. The live broadcast of the event is now slated for Saturday evening in the U.S. at 5 p.m. PT or 8 p.m. ET.
