Alberta Farmer Raises Alarm on Oil Well Emissions

Teresa Patry, a farmer and rancher in Vermilion, Alberta, is among those feeling marginalized by the province’s oil and gas regulator. On her property, two active oil wells have been identified by an independent air quality assessment as emitting methane and potentially harmful chemicals in the direction of her residence and livestock. Patry has voiced concerns about the odors affecting her health and that of her family and animals, but her interactions with the regulatory authorities have left her feeling dismissed.

While the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) declined to address Patry’s specific grievances, citing adherence to government policies, environmental activists have highlighted similar complaints from numerous landowners facing environmental contamination due to aging or decommissioned oil wells. Despite Alberta’s efforts to address methane emissions and manage aging oil and gas infrastructure, advocates worry that the challenges faced by individuals like Patry will continue to be overlooked.

Patry initially had faith in the industry when her parents signed a lease in 2006, believing in the oversight of responsible regulators. However, over time, the wells on her property, transitioning through different ownerships, became sources of concern due to noise, disarray, and unpleasant odors resembling gas station fumes. These emissions, identified as venting, primarily release methane, a potent greenhouse gas, along with volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) associated with various adverse health effects.

In 2016, Patry encountered alarming incidents, including the sudden death of a flock of lambs near one of the wells, followed by her own diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and her daughter’s thyroid complications. More recently, her son experienced serious health issues, prompting a reevaluation of the potential impacts of the nearby oil wells. Despite challenges in directly linking symptoms to the wells, concerns persist regarding the health risks posed by VOCs and the need for comprehensive research into industrial pollutants’ health consequences.

Patry’s ongoing interactions with the AER and provincial officials have yielded assurances that the wells are compliant with regulations, despite her persistent complaints. An environmental inspector’s findings, indicating continuous venting from the wells, have added credence to Patry’s concerns, urging caution when exposed to emissions. Advocates like Phillip Meintzer underscore the prevalence of similar struggles faced by landowners in dealing with aging oil infrastructure and emphasize the necessity for enhanced regulatory measures to safeguard affected individuals like Patry.
