Adrien Brody has looked back on the backlash he received over his controversial kiss with Halle Berry at the 2003 Oscar Awards.

The Darjeeling Limited actor has received his second nomination for Best Actor this year for his role as Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor László Tóth in the critically-acclaimed film, The Brutalist. He previously won an Oscar for his role as Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman in The Pianist in 2003.

When he won the award, he was presented the gong by Halle, who previously won Best Actress for Monster’s Ball. After walking on stage, he randomly embraced Halle and kissed her, which received a lot of backlash from people who branded the move as ‘inappropriate’ in recent years.

A confused and shocked Halle went along with the moment before she laughed and looked at the crowd. In a new interview with Variety, he addressed the backlash and said he never had the ‘intention of making anyone feel bad’.

He said: “We live in a very conscious time, which is a wonderful thing. And nothing that I ever do or have done or would’ve done is ever done with the intention of making anyone feel bad.” Halle also previously discussed the spontaneous moment during a chat on Watch What Happens Live! in 2017.

The actress explained: “I was like, ‘What the fuck is happening right now?’ That is what was going through my mind.” She said she understood that Adrien was experiencing a overwhelming and unique moment in his life, adding: “Because I was there the year before and I know the feeling of being out of your body, I just f**king went with it.”

After Adrian won an award at the Golden Globes for his role in The Brutalist, he took to Instagram to thank the voters for the ‘extraordinary honor’. He said: “Thank you to The Golden Globes voters for this truly extraordinary honor. My family and I will never forget this magical moment. And to @thombrowne for making me look like a winner on this special night @goldenglobes #2025.”

Halle was one of the many stars in the comment section congratulating him, writing: “Congratulations my friend. You are truly one of one!” The Brutalist follows the story of a Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor who travels to the US, where he struggles to achieve the American Dream until a rich client changes his entire life.

Other stars featured in the film include Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn and Raffey Cassidy.
