“Marineland Seeks to Export Beluga Whales for First Time”

Marineland, the former amusement park and zoo in Niagara Falls, Ontario, has submitted requests to the federal government to export all 30 of its beluga whales, as disclosed by a government official familiar with the situation. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson confirmed that the decision regarding the permits is pending and will prioritize the welfare of the whales.

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, a theme park in Zhuhai, China, is deliberating on whether to acquire the belugas from Marineland. This year marks the first time in Marineland’s six-decade history, excluding closures due to COVID-19, that the park has not commenced its season, prompting concerns about the well-being of the remaining animals.

Since 2019, nineteen belugas have perished at the park, with the sole remaining orca, Kiska, passing away in 2023. Recent drone footage captured Marineland staff caring for the remaining belugas and dolphins through feeding and interaction.

Legislation such as Bill S-203 prohibits the use of cetaceans for breeding or entertainment in Canada. The act also restricts cetacean export unless for scientific research or if it serves the best interests of the animal’s welfare.

Despite no cetacean export permits being issued since May 2021, when five belugas were sold to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, three of them succumbed to various health issues within two years of the transfer.

Experts emphasize that transporting the whales requires thorough assessments of their health status, feeding patterns, and overall well-being. Care for these animals, whether transported or remaining at Marineland, entails significant costs involving water quality maintenance, veterinary care, and daily animal interaction.

Regarding the pending decision on Marineland’s export applications, Animal Justice and other advocates propose sending the belugas to a seaside sanctuary funded partly by Marineland. The feasibility of releasing the belugas into the wild is deemed unviable due to their lack of adaptation, potentially leading to dire consequences for their survival.
