“Markham Divided Over IndyCar Series Shift”

After spending years racing along Toronto’s lakeshore, Markham has now become the new starting point for the NTT IndyCar Series. While many in the city are excited about this change, not everyone is on board with celebrating.

For a lot of residents, this shift represents a significant moment for Markham, expected to attract around 150,000 visitors annually for a weekend event. Marcos Yu, the general manager of the Hilton Markham Suites, expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the opportunity to showcase the city, local cuisine, and hospitality industry.

Yu mentioned ongoing renovations at the Hilton Markham Suites, set to be completed before the event begins, aiming to present the hotel and the city in the best light. He emphasized the proximity of wineries, unique venues, and attractions in Markham that guests might not expect, hoping that visitors will explore and spread the word about these offerings apart from the IndyCar race.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti emphasized the economic advantages of hosting the race, estimating a $50 million annual economic impact on the Greater Toronto Area. He stated that Markham stands to benefit, along with neighboring communities.

Organizers noted that Markham will offer easier access for most fans compared to the previous location, with convenient transportation options such as major highways, the Unionville GO Station, and the VIVA Rapid Transit system. Additionally, accommodations in Markham are expected to be more affordable than in downtown Toronto.

However, some residents are less thrilled about the new race location, feeling left out of the decision-making process. Joska Zerczi, president of the Unionville Residents Association, expressed surprise at the announcement, highlighting concerns about noise, traffic, and city navigation. Shanta Sundarason, also from the association, echoed these sentiments, noting a flood of inquiries and worries from locals.

Residents’ main worries revolve around noise disturbance, traffic congestion, and the impact on vulnerable populations like seniors. Amica Senior Lifestyles, a local senior residence, pledged to prioritize resident and staff well-being amid the event’s preparations, aiming to address any potential issues proactively.

While the city mentioned prior consultations with directly affected stakeholders, residents and workers feel left in the dark about the event’s implications. They are calling for more transparent communication and community involvement leading up to the race weekend scheduled for August 14 to 16, 2026.
