“Canadian PM Carney Talks Tariffs with Trump”

Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed that he engaged in discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, indicating that the removal of American tariffs that continue to impact key Canadian industries is unlikely to happen immediately. This conversation coincided with the lifting of most of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, viewed as a goodwill gesture to urge Trump to remove tariffs on sectors such as steel and aluminum.

Describing the Monday talk as positive, Carney highlighted that they delved into various topics, including trade, geopolitical matters, labor issues, and more. Additionally, Carney mentioned that Michael Sabia, the new clerk of the Privy Council, is currently in the U.S. capital for discussions with American counterparts regarding strategic sectors. Carney emphasized that while immediate resolutions may not be expected, ongoing conversations will persist.

The news of the discussion was unexpected, as the Prime Minister’s Office did not provide a summary of the conversation as customary. However, the PMO affirmed that Carney and Trump maintain close and frequent communication for the benefit of workers, businesses, and all Canadians. Earlier this year, Canada imposed duties on $60 billion worth of U.S. goods, but recently removed them from products covered by the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

In response to these developments, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Carney’s actions, labeling them as another concession. Poilievre expressed that if the Conservatives had been in power, he would have approached the president respectfully to negotiate the removal of tariffs.

Against the backdrop of the ongoing trade tensions and the impending CUSMA review, Carney and his cabinet are engaging in two days of meetings to prepare for the House of Commons’ upcoming session. The upcoming budget is expected to be a key focus during these closed-door discussions. Originally scheduled for spring, the budget was postponed to October due to the federal election. Carney, who pledged to balance the operating budget over the next three years during the election campaign, emphasized that the budget would involve a combination of austerity measures and investments, achievable through disciplined financial management.
