Sarah McLachlan Snubs U.S. Performance Over Free Speech

Canadian artist Sarah McLachlan decided to forgo her musical performances at the U.S. debut screening of the documentary “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” in Los Angeles on Sunday night. McLachlan, co-founder of the 1990s Lilith Fair music festival showcasing female artists, made the announcement during the film’s introduction at the Ford Theater, citing concerns about free speech restrictions.

In a video shared by a journalist from The Hollywood Reporter, McLachlan expressed that she and others had chosen to stand in solidarity with the principles of free speech instead of performing. The audience responded with a standing ovation after her statement.

Although the performances were meant to be surprises, various sources reported that McLachlan, along with singer-songwriter Jewel and artists Olivia Rodrigo and Mya, were scheduled to take the stage. McLachlan admitted to struggling with her speech before the screening, highlighting societal challenges, particularly regarding women’s rights, trans and queer rights, and perceived limitations on free speech.

The decision not to perform is believed to be influenced by recent events, including the suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for remarks made following an incident involving conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The Lilith Fair documentary, distributed by ABC News Studios in the U.S., was launched amid controversies related to free speech.

Disney announced the return of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following discussions with Kimmel, who has not publicly addressed his suspension. Celebrities, including Canadian actor Tatiana Maslany, supported Kimmel and criticized potential censorship in the media landscape. McLachlan’s representatives declined to provide further clarification on her statements.

McLachlan emphasized the power of music in fostering unity and inspiring positive change in communities. The documentary “Lilith Fair” is available for streaming on CBC Gem in Canada, as well as on Hulu and Disney+ in the U.S.
