Several Morrisons Daily convenience stores are set to shut for the last time today, with another set to close in a month’s time.
The supermarket giant announced last month it was planning to shut down 52 of its in-store cafes and 17 of its smaller outlets as part of a significant revamp. In addition, Morrisons said it would also shut down several of its hot food counters, meat counters, fish counters, florists, and pharmacies across its supermarket store estate. The supermarket said the move was due to the Government’s increase in employers’ National Insurance coupled with this month’s rise in the minimum wage.
Last week it unveiled the complete list of 17 convenience stores to close, with 16 of those set to shut tomorrow. The Haxby Morrisons Daily store will close a month later on May 14.
The supermarket giant said: “Morrisons has made the difficult decision to close some Morrisons Daily stores, some of which contain Post Offices. We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause for our customers and apologise for the short notification as these branches close between 9 April and 14 May.
“We have reviewed Post Office provision in these areas and for most of these affected branches we are advertising the vacancies.”

Earlier today it was reported Morrisons has made a major change to its More Card loyalty scheme. As of this week, Morrisons More Card holders can donate loyalty points to the charity Marie Curie.
Supermarket shoppers will be able to donate their More Card points to Marie Curie in multiples of 1,000 points, which is the equivalent of £1, through the More Card App or More website. Each donation will be converted into a monetary value and transferred to Marie Curie.
David Scott, Corporate Affairs Director at Morrisons, said: “We are delighted to see this next step in our partnership with Marie Curie which builds on £1million already raised thanks to our incredible colleagues and customers.
“Today’s news marks a meaningful evolution in the Morrisons More Card loyalty programme and follows feedback from customers who want their everyday shopping to make a difference to a great charity. Whether our customers choose to spend their points or donate them, every transaction now has the potential to support families facing terminal illness.”
