Trent Alexander-Arnold refused to comment on his hot-button future at Liverpool after his goal against Leicester moved the Reds within touching distance of winning the Premier League title. Alexander-Arnold, 26, came off the bench in the second half and scored a left-footed corker to decide the game.

Having suffered an injury against Paris Saint-Germain, the England international hadn’t played for Liverpool since before the March international break, during which reports emerged claiming that he’s agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer. Alexander-Arnold is out of contract in June and can freely negotiate with foreign clubs.

On his return from injury, the Liverpool right-back reminded the world what he can do. After a passionate celebration in front of Liverpool’s travelling fans, taking his shirt off, Alexander-Arnold spoke to Sky Sports and was asked the inevitable about his future.

“I have said all season that I am not going to speak on my situation. I am not going to go into the details,” he replied. “But days like today are always special. Scoring goals, playing games, winning games, winning titles – they are special moments for me and I am glad to do my part.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who was in the same situation as Alexander-Arnold until he signed a new two-year deal earlier this week, pushed him towards the fans at full-time to have another moment in the spotlight. Boss Arne Slot has been consistently tight-lipped on the defender’s future, refusing to go into detail.

Pressed on Alexander-Arnold’s situation during Friday’s news conference, Slot declared: “Let’s see what the future brings.”

The Reds manager also said regarding Van Dijk and Mo Salah’s recent contract extensions: “It’s already a big summer now. It was a big thing – ‘can we hold on to them?’ And by holding on already to two, it’s already a big summer and let’s see what the rest of the summer will bring.

“It would be strange for me to say now I’m not happy with the team we have, because I’ve said it for a year so we are happy with the team we have. Maybe if we can even keep that team that would already be a big summer.”

Further discussing Alexander-Arnold, Slot added: “Trent is coming back from an injury and trained with us yesterday. Every time he plays and trains with us he shows his commitment. He’s worked so hard to be back already and the moment he is on the pitch he shows me what a great football player he is and how much he’s involved in us trying to achieve our goals this season.

“He’s worked so hard during the whole season and now in his rehab to be back with the team again. The fans of Liverpool, everyone who watches football for the last five, six or seven years, knows he is an incredible full-back, has been an incredible full-back for this football club and let’s see what the future brings.”
