Asda has been forced to pull a popular food item off its shelves ahead of Easter celebrations – with shoppers warned “do not eat” due to serious health fears.
The supermarket giant has urgently recalled its Simple To Cook Asian Inspired Pork Belly Slices after the ingredients were found to be listed incorrectly. The company discovered the item may contain milk and sulphites, posing a potentially severe health risk to anyone with an allergy. But these ingredients do not appear on the label, with some items having been mispacked with Asda‘s Simple To Cook Tomato & Mozzarella Pork Meatballs. Affected products include those displaying a use by date of April 25, and barcode 5063089827178.
Shoppers who have purchased any of the affected batches are now being urged to return them to their nearest Asda store, where they will be issued a full refund – without the need for a receipt. An Asda spokesperson confirmed the recall and said no other date codes were affected. “We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you would like any further information please contact Asda Customer Relations – 08009520101,” they added.
A FoodGov spokesperson said: “Asda is recalling Asda Simple To Cook Asian Inspired Pork Belly Slices because the product may contain milk and sulphites which are not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.
“Some packs have been mispacked with Asda Simple To Cook Tomato & Mozzarella Pork Meatballs.” They added: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.”
Every now and then, supermarkets across the UK are made to recall items as precautionary measures if their labels are found to omit key details related to their ingredients. Last week, fellow budget supermarket Aldi issued a “do not eat” warning after recalling one of its products due to allergy fears.
Aldi’s Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter were found to contain milk not mentioned on the label, with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) stating the ingredient could pose “a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents”. The particular recall was focused on a specific pack – the 385g poatoes with a use-by date of April 12, 2025.
An Aldi spokesperson said: “Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given. We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation.”
