Members of Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly demonstrated support for Greenland by hoisting its flag amid concerns over potential annexation threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. The flag-raising event took place in downtown Iqaluit, attended by numerous individuals, including the territory’s premier, the Speaker, a representative from the Danish consulate in Iqaluit, and Greenland residents residing in Nunavut.
Nunavut Speaker David Joanasie emphasized the strong connections between Nunavut’s Inuit community and the significant Inuit population in Greenland. He conveyed solidarity and unity, stating, “For the people of Greenland living in Iqaluit or Nunavut, we stand by you, support you, and will advocate for you.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump shared an artificial intelligence-generated image featuring a meeting in the Oval Office with European leaders, displaying American flags over Greenland, Canada, Cuba, and Venezuela on a Western Hemisphere map. Trump has also issued threats of imposing additional tariffs on eight European nations that have opposed his intentions regarding Greenland.
Simultaneously, a rally in Iqaluit garnered support for Greenland while protests against Trump unfolded in Nuuk, the capital of the island. The demonstrations reflected the widespread concern and opposition to the potential annexation of Greenland.
