“Trump Unveils $1 Billion ‘Board of Peace’ in Davos”

In Davos, Switzerland, Donald Trump introduced his “Board of Peace,” a concept that evokes thoughts of a fictional superagency tasked with global peacekeeping. This initiative, comprising handpicked members, operates with flexible rules and a hefty price tag of $1 billion US for a permanent seat. The board’s formation grants Trump significant autonomy over its actions.

Nearly 30 countries, including Bulgaria and Belarus, have joined the board, which critics view as Trump’s attempt to establish an alternative to the United Nations. Yossi Mekelberg of Chatham House believes Trump’s actions reflect a disregard for the UN’s post-1945 norms and rules, indicating a push towards a system controlled by the U.S. president.

The Board of Peace, aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 2803, stems from Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan. While the board focuses on Gaza’s reconstruction, key Middle Eastern nations like Qatar and Egypt are onboard, despite the absence of Palestinian representation at higher levels.

European participation remains limited, with only Bulgaria and Hungary signing up due to concerns over the board’s alignment with UN principles. The potential undermining of the UN by Trump’s initiative raises red flags globally, particularly among nations in the Global South.

Shashank Joshi of the Economist suggests that the Board of Peace’s formation may inadvertently bolster the UN’s standing, as other influential nations like China, Brazil, and India will continue to engage with and influence the organization. Despite skepticism surrounding Trump’s motives, the board’s endorsement by the UN underscores its role in facilitating the Gaza ceasefire and future peace efforts.

Trump’s wielding of the UN veto power complicates the international dynamics, despite his criticisms of the organization’s effectiveness. The U.S. has utilized its veto to thwart Security Council resolutions calling for Gaza ceasefires, highlighting the intricate interplay between Trump’s board and the established UN framework.
