An upcoming change in your home décor might catch your eye soon. A unique self-portrait of David Bowie, featuring his handprints, is set to be auctioned for the first time by Sotheby’s Modern British and Irish Art Day Auction on Oct. 15.
This artwork, created by the singer in 1996, is estimated to fetch between £35,000 to £55,000 (approximately $66,000 Cdn to $104,000 Cdn). Originally given by Bowie to his St Ives gallerist, the painting has been held in a private collection for thirty years and is now on public display in London before its auction.
Part of a series of eight large-scale portraits from the mid-1990s, this particular piece is considered the most emotionally expressive. Sotheby’s senior specialist Jen Hardie described the self-portrait as a reflection of Bowie’s creativity and self-awareness, offering a personal connection to the artist through his direct gaze and handprints on the canvas.
The painting, done on paper, showcases Bowie’s distinctive uneven pupils, with one eye appearing larger than the other, creating a striking visual effect. His handprints on the artwork add an intimate element, making this piece a rare opportunity to own a piece of David Bowie’s artistic legacy.
