U.S. officials engaged in negotiations with Ryan Wedding, a Canadian fugitive and former Olympic snowboarder accused of being a major cocaine trafficker, leading to his surrender at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. Mexican security expert David Saucedo revealed that FBI Director Kash Patel traveled to Mexico City after reaching a surrender agreement with Wedding. Saucedo, citing conversations with Mexican security sources, stated that these negotiations had been ongoing for several days.
Patel’s visit to Mexico was pre-planned, as he met with Mexican security officials to coordinate the apprehension of Wedding. According to Patel, Mexican and U.S. authorities collaborated closely to arrest Wedding in Mexico City. Wedding was taken into custody by the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team following what Patel described as “intense negotiations.”
Mexico’s security secretary, Omar García Harfuch, confirmed that a Canadian individual surrendered at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico. Saucedo mentioned that Mexican authorities were aware of the communication between U.S. officials and Wedding before his surrender and speculated that Harfuch refrained from discussing the matter during a news conference to respect Patel’s role in the operation.
Patel likened Wedding to notorious drug lords like Pablo Escobar and Joaquín Guzmán Loera. Saucedo revealed that Wedding had been living in Mexico City under the protection of the Sinaloa cartel’s faction, Los Chapitos, until they withdrew their support, leaving Wedding vulnerable. Following this, Wedding became a target for rivals within the cartel.
In light of authorities closing in on him, Wedding opted to surrender to the U.S. rather than face Mexican authorities. Saucedo suggested that the Sinaloa cartel eliminated Wedding to maintain control over his criminal network. Los Chapitos are expected to inherit Wedding’s illicit empire.
