“Trump Administration Optimistic on Iran Deal Talks”

The Trump administration expressed confidence on Wednesday in reaching an agreement to halt the conflict with Iran, while also cautioning about escalating economic measures against Tehran if it persists in its defiance. President Donald Trump indicated his belief that the conflict initiated with Israel in late February is nearing its conclusion, despite the implementation of a shipping blockade and reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. administration hinted at the possibility of imposing secondary sanctions on purchasers of Iranian oil as a strategic move to enhance negotiation leverage, following the recent relaxation of certain energy sanctions against Iran. Discussions between U.S. and Iranian officials are contemplating a return to Pakistan for further talks in the upcoming weekend after previous negotiations concluded without a breakthrough.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt expressed optimism about the potential for a deal, highlighting the ongoing and productive nature of mediated conversations with Pakistan. Denying reports of a formal extension request for the agreed two-week ceasefire from April 8, Leavitt emphasized the continuous dialogue.

While no new talks have been confirmed, it is likely that future in-person discussions will be held in Pakistan, according to Leavitt. Pakistan’s military confirmed the arrival of Field Marshal Asim Munir in Tehran, with the intention of bridging the differences between the two sides. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi welcomed Munir, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in the region.

In terms of economic pressure on Iran, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent anticipated a pause in China’s purchase of Iranian oil due to the blockade on vessels accessing Iranian ports. Bessent highlighted the potential for secondary sanctions on countries procuring Iranian crude, emphasizing the financial repercussions similar to the military actions taken by the U.S. and Israel.

The U.S. Treasury’s warning to two unnamed Chinese banks regarding processing Iranian money and the decision not to renew waivers for Russian and Iranian oil purchases without facing U.S. sanctions signify a shift in policy. These actions mark the end of the Trump administration’s efforts to increase oil supplies and lower global energy prices through waivers.

The U.S. military reported successful interception of tankers attempting to enter or exit Iranian ports during the initial 48 hours of the blockade. Despite this, Iran’s Fars News agency noted the passage of an Iranian supertanker subject to U.S. sanctions towards Iran’s Imam Khomeini port. The Iranian military command issued a warning of halting trade flows in strategic waterways if the U.S. blockade persists.

President Trump has also issued threats of further escalation if the conflict resumes, highlighting the potential for destructive military actions against Iran.
