“Stelco Hamilton Plant Shutdown to Affect 500 Jobs”

Stelco Holdings Inc. announced its intention to temporarily shut down a section of its Hamilton plant to protect the company’s viability amidst pressure from U.S. tariffs affecting its sales. The move is expected to impact around 500 employees. In a memo shared with CBC News, the company revealed its plan to indefinitely idle the cold-rolled and coated operations at the Hamilton Works facility, with the process commencing on October 9.

United Steelworkers Local 1005 President, Ron Wells, anticipates that approximately 350 steelworkers will face layoffs due to this decision. Expressing concerns about the uncertainty surrounding the duration of the layoffs, Wells emphasized the importance of following seniority guidelines in the layoff process. Stelco assured that the shutdown would not hinder its hot-rolled steel product supply.

Stelco’s Vice President of Sales, Frederic Fafard, highlighted the challenging market conditions for cold-rolled and coated products caused by ongoing trade disruptions impacting the Canadian steel industry. The company emphasized that the action was necessary to navigate the current market dynamics.

The acquisition of Hamilton-based Stelco by Ohio’s Cleveland-Cliffs in a $3.4 billion deal in November 2024 aimed to prioritize national interests and recognize the workforce’s significance. While the layoffs have stirred disappointment among stakeholders, efforts are underway to minimize the impact on Canadian workers.

Despite the challenges, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly criticized the layoffs, emphasizing the government’s readiness to support Stelco amid tariff pressures. The decision to proceed with the layoffs despite offers of financial aid was deemed “extremely disappointing” by the Minister.

In a parallel development, U.S. President Trump highlighted a new $15 billion investment plan by Minnesota’s Mesabi Metallics, showcasing the effectiveness of American tariffs on imported steel. The announcement raised concerns among Canadian steelworkers, prompting discussions on protective measures for workers amid evolving trade dynamics.

As stakeholders navigate the repercussions of the layoffs and trade tensions, the steel industry faces uncertainties exacerbated by global market dynamics. Calls for collaborative efforts between governments and industry players resonate as they seek solutions to safeguard jobs and sustain steel production.
