“MPs Push for Reforms to Enhance Question Period Accountability”

Liberal Member of Parliament Corey Hogan raised concerns about the state of question period during a recent session in the House of Commons. The ongoing criticism of question period is not a new issue, with debates surrounding its effectiveness and contributors being a long-standing topic. Despite the historical grievances, Hogan emphasized the need to address the shortcomings of question period, highlighting the lack of true accountability due to shallow questions, repetitive responses, and superficial exchanges between members. Hogan stressed the potential for improvement, stating that the current format does not have to remain as it is.

During a discussion on potential changes to the standing orders and procedures of the House, Hogan proposed reforms to enhance the question period experience. He suggested extending the time allocated for questions and responses in certain sessions to allow for more substantial dialogues. Additionally, Hogan recommended focusing question period on specific ministers each day and minimizing the repetitive nature of the exchanges.

Conservative MP Michael Chong supported Hogan’s proposals and reiterated his own suggestions for reform, emphasizing the importance of restoring power to the Speaker, increasing committee independence, and limiting the prime minister’s authority over parliamentary officers. Chong highlighted the necessity of checks and balances within Parliament to prevent the abuse of executive power.

The debate on parliamentary reforms generated interest, but the outcome remains uncertain. The discussion has been referred to the procedure and House affairs committee for further consideration. Members of Parliament stressed the need for concrete actions rather than just discussions to bring about meaningful changes to the standing orders and parliamentary procedures. Despite previous attempts to reform question period and parliamentary practices, significant overhauls have not materialized, raising doubts about the willingness of officials to address the shortcomings in the system.
