“Mourning Memoir: Siblings’ Tale of Grief & Resilience”

Donna Morrissey and her four siblings were reminiscing over drinks one evening when she had an epiphany. Raised in Newfoundland, Morrissey and her sisters spent most of their time with their mother indoors, while their brothers engaged in outdoor activities with their father. This pattern persisted into adulthood, keeping certain aspects of their father’s life unknown to Morrissey until that revelatory night.

From this introspective gathering emerged Morrissey’s latest literary creation, “Tell It to the Water: Five Siblings Tell of Their Father’s Grief and His Struggle Back to Hope.” While the focus is on their father’s mourning after losing his wife to cancer, the narrative also delves into other tragedies, notably the death of Morrissey’s brother Ford in a workplace accident decades ago.

Reflecting on her family’s shared experiences, Morrissey acknowledged the emotional vulnerability that emerged while penning this memoir, unlike her usual fictional works. The collaborative process involved numerous discussions between Morrissey and her siblings, sparking occasional tensions that quickly dissipated, ultimately strengthening their bond.

The book, written from multiple perspectives, offers readers a window into the intricate web of familial grief and resilience. Psychologist Dr. Simon Sherry highlighted the enduring nature of relationships with lost loved ones, emphasizing the evolving dynamics of grief over time.

Morrissey aspires for her book to inspire introspection among readers and provide a blueprint for those seeking to document their family histories. Through confronting their past tragedies, Morrissey and her siblings have found solace in each other’s company, cherishing their shared journey as they navigate life’s challenges together.
