Both political parties have been engaging in talks to potentially resolve parliamentary deadlock and prevent another federal election within a year, as per three senior sources from the Liberals and Conservatives. These discussions may involve offering some compromises to the Opposition, the sources indicated.
Although Carney’s Liberals are still three seats short of a majority, recent interactions with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre have shown a more cooperative approach. Both leaders met recently, with Poilievre advocating for reduced taxes, a smaller deficit, and policies to enhance Canada’s affordability, safety, and self-reliance.
The possibility of amending key bills, such as the Budget Implementation Act, has been raised to address concerns and potentially gain broader support. Discussions are ongoing regarding proposed amendments to bills like C-9, which includes new Criminal Code offenses related to hate speech.
Efforts are being made to reach a consensus on potential amendments to these bills, allowing for the swift passage of uncontroversial elements while continuing debates on contentious issues. With various legislative matters under review, the parties are striving to find common ground and avoid triggering an election.
Despite ongoing efforts to secure a majority government, Carney’s position has not significantly improved since the fall. Reports suggest that discussions around triggering an election to pursue a majority were held between Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, although Carney has publicly refuted such claims, emphasizing the government’s commitment to delivering results for Canadians.
Poilievre, having received strong support in a recent leadership review, has expressed a willingness to collaborate with the government on expediting bills and enhancing Canadian trade diversification while protecting jobs reliant on trade with the U.S.
