“Funding Woes Threaten Closure of Winter Homeless Support”

In Medicine Hat, a temporary measure to assist the city’s homeless population during the winter faces potential closure due to funding issues. The closure of a daytime shelter last winter prompted the expansion of services by SafeLink Alberta, which offers harm reduction supplies and support. However, the group has been denied access to federal funds intended for addressing drug addiction, jeopardizing the continuation of their homeless support service.

City councillor Bill Cocks expressed concerns about the impact of potential closure on the vulnerable population and called for a reevaluation by the provincial government. SafeLink Alberta’s daytime drop-in services, which cater to around 60-70 individuals daily, focus on reducing disease transmission from drug use and providing support for recovery and social services.

The denial of funding was attributed to insufficient details on fund usage and a lack of alignment with provincial priorities, according to Alberta’s Mental Health and Addictions Ministry. The government’s decision was also influenced by previous controversies involving SafeLink, emphasizing the need for better coordination with provincial objectives.

Amidst these challenges, SafeLink is exploring alternative funding sources to sustain its operations. Without an additional $300,000 annually, the organization may have to discontinue its drop-in services, which serve as a crucial low-barrier daytime space for those in need. The search for a permanent shelter in collaboration with The Mustard Seed continues, as efforts are made to address the ongoing homeless support needs in Medicine Hat.
