In a recent development, jurors were presented with an audio recording from 2008 featuring Duane (Keffe D) Davis disclosing to detectives that his nephew Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson was the one who fired the fatal shots that took the life of renowned rapper Tupac Shakur back in 1996 in Las Vegas. Davis, who admitted to being present in the car with Anderson during the incident, is currently facing charges for allegedly masterminding the killing of the 25-year-old hip-hop icon.
During the police interview with Los Angeles authorities, Davis recounted that he and Anderson, accompanied by two other individuals, were in a white Cadillac when they pulled up beside a vehicle carrying Shakur and Marion (Suge) Knight, the hip-hop magnate and Death Row Records leader. Davis mentioned that he would have taken action if the circumstances were different, but due to the positioning of Knight’s car, he passed the gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who declined to handle it. Subsequently, Anderson, seated in the back, seized the weapon and initiated the gunfire, as per Davis’s account in the recording played for the jurors.
This marked the first instance where Davis openly discussed his role in the tragic event with authorities, with the interview serving as crucial evidence in the ongoing legal proceedings against the 63-year-old defendant. Prosecutors emphasized their reliance on Davis’s own admissions in police interrogations, podcasts, and his co-authored memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” to bolster their case.
Despite the allegations, Davis has pleaded not guilty, with his defense attorney dismissing the prosecution’s narrative as fictitious and asserting that Davis’s statements were unreliable. The interview initially centered on the 1997 shooting death of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., in which Davis was briefly considered a suspect before being cleared later on.
Prosecutors argued that Davis’s subsequent disclosure of details related to the shooting nullified any confidentiality agreements he might have had with law enforcement. They contended that Shakur’s killing was a retaliatory act following an altercation between Shakur’s entourage and Anderson earlier in the day at the MGM Grand, a situation in which Davis was present but not directly involved.
