“Lost Tortoise Found 20km Away: Manitoba Marsh Mystery”

A peculiar discovery was made at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake when Molly, an African spurred tortoise not native to the area, was found meandering slowly along the wetland’s outskirts. The staff at Oak Hammock, including nature interpreter Gillian Malchuk, were surprised by the presence of the 36-kilogram tortoise, as it was a species uncommon to the region.

After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, the staff initially thought it might be a local snapping turtle. However, a sighting logged on the iNaturalist app confirmed the presence of the tortoise, prompting a search by Malchuk and her colleagues. The tortoise was quickly located in the parking lot, much to the staff’s amazement due to its size.

Molly, as she was later identified, was cared for by the Oak Hammock staff, who fed her cucumbers and flower petals and provided guided tours until her owners were located through a social media post. The family had owned Molly for around 15 years, and they were reunited with her on July 22.

Despite the reunion, the mystery remains about how Molly traveled approximately 20 kilometers to the marsh from her home. Speculations include the possibility of a well-intentioned individual relocating her or Molly embarking on the journey herself. The staff at Oak Hammock Marsh marveled at Molly’s unexpected adventure and the enigma surrounding her trek.
