Scotties Tournament of Hearts: Einarson, Peterson, Black, and Sturmay Secure Playoff Spots

Moving day turned into a surprising cut-down day for several teams competing in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. On Wednesday, four out of the five available spots were clinched by Kerri Einarson of Canada, Beth Peterson of Manitoba, Christina Black of Nova Scotia, and Selena Sturmay of Alberta at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

Einarson secured her place in the playoff picture in Pool A with a convincing 13-2 victory over Nicky Kaufman of the Northwest Territories. In the afternoon matches, Peterson, Black, and Sturmay sealed their spots in Pool B, setting the stage for the Canadian women’s curling championship.

Black expressed relief at not having to face a must-win situation in their final round-robin game, a departure from previous years. Peterson defeated Kayla Skrlik of Alberta 8-4, Black overcame Amanda Power of Prince Edward Island 6-3, and Sturmay bested Mackenzie Mitchell of Newfoundland and Labrador 11-6.

With one spot in Pool A still up for grabs, the teams geared up for a full day of round-robin play on Thursday to secure the best possible seeding for the playoffs. Einarson, who scored four points in the second end and maintained her lead throughout the game, stood in second place in Pool A, trailing the undefeated Kaitlyn Lawes of Manitoba.

Peterson led the undefeated teams in Pool B with a 6-0 record, followed by Black at 6-1 and Sturmay at 5-1. Skrlik and Krista Scharf of Northern Ontario shared a fourth-place tie at 3-3.

In other early matches, Taylour Stevens of Nova Scotia edged out Taylor Reese-Hansen of British Columbia 11-10, while Jolene Campbell of Saskatchewan defeated Bayly Scoffin of Yukon 10-4. Hailey Armstrong of Ontario clinched an 8-5 victory over Jolianne Fortin of Quebec in an extra end.

Thursday’s schedule included pivotal matchups as teams vied for playoff spots. Stevens and Armstrong, both with 5-2 records, were set to face off, while Reese-Hansen, Fortin, and Lawes were also in action.

The playoffs will see the top team from Pool A facing the second-place team from Pool B in the initial round, leading to further matchups to determine the finalists. The ultimate champion will represent Canada at the world women’s curling championship in Calgary in March.
