“True North: Indigenous Art Elevates Curling Culture”

A collaboration between Goldline Curling, Curling Canada, and 2-Spirit Anishinaabe/Cree artist and activist Shelby Gagnon for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics showcased a new perspective on the sport of curling. Gagnon’s involvement aimed to highlight her connection to the land, water, and Indigenous history through her artwork. The project, named “True North,” brought together Gagnon’s artistic vision with Goldline Curling’s expertise in providing equipment for all levels of players.

The partnership began when Goldline Curling president Erin Flowers discovered Gagnon’s work in a local magazine and a mural in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The collaboration evolved organically, leading to the incorporation of Indigenous art in the curling merchandise designs. The Maple Leaf motif, a symbol deeply rooted in Canadian identity, was central to the collection, with intricate water-inspired lines adding a unique touch.

The curling kits featured Gagnon’s art prominently, emphasizing the support for Canadian athletes. Flowers, mindful of the potential appropriation concerns, ensured a collaborative approach with Gagnon in showcasing her art authentically. The designs, including a hummingbird motif symbolizing luck on a journey, resonated with the ethos of nature and storytelling that both artists aimed to convey.

Despite challenges in manufacturing and logistics, the unveiling of the uniforms in Halifax received overwhelming praise from the curling community and beyond. The success of the project underscored the deep connection between the artists and the positive impact of their collaboration. Gagnon’s focus on art’s emotive power and the significance of relationships in her work highlighted a shared commitment to artistry and storytelling.

The True North collection not only represented a creative collaboration but also symbolized a meaningful fusion of art, sport, and cultural expression on the global stage, resonating with audiences seeking inspiration and connection in challenging times.
