“Rare Meteorite Fragments Found on Remote Canadian Island”

Meteorites from a large fireball that appeared in the skies over northern Ontario last month have been found on Cockburn Island in Lake Huron. Dave Kenny and Anton Clemens, members of Meteorite Recovery Specialists, discovered several fragments on the mostly uninhabited island, located off Manitoulin Island. Samples were sent to the Meteor Physics Group at Western University, confirming that the rocks came from a meteor that broke apart on June 19. Kenny, an experienced meteorite hunter, expressed excitement as this was his first meteorite recovery on Canadian soil. Accessing the island was challenging due to its remote location, and permission had to be obtained from local authorities. The team spent two and a half days searching the island and found multiple meteorite fragments, with the largest weighing 57.6 grams. These stones are believed to be chondrites, originating from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The main fragment will undergo further study at Western University in the coming months.
