“Advocacy Group Urges Lawmakers to Protect Peatlands”

An environmental advocacy group in New Brunswick is urging lawmakers to amend regulations concerning wetlands and commercial activities. The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s New Brunswick chapter is pushing for changes to the province’s clean water laws to ensure that all wetlands, including peatlands, are subject to watercourse permits for development projects. Currently, while most wetlands require permits, peatlands are exempt, which means they do not undergo the necessary scrutiny. The group emphasized the importance of protecting peatlands due to their role in carbon storage and climate mitigation. Peatlands, which are prevalent in the northeast of the province, are significant for their ability to store carbon over thousands of years. Additionally, they serve as a natural barrier against wildfires. The New Brunswick Peat Producers Association highlighted the economic value of peatlands, employing around 2,000 individuals and generating $250 million annually. Environment Minister Gilles LePage expressed uncertainty about why peatlands were excluded from permit requirements, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive review. Green Party MLA Megan Mitton emphasized the unique characteristics and ecological importance of peatlands, calling for laws that reflect New Brunswickers’ appreciation for these ecosystems. The proposed changes aim to enhance protections for peatlands and ensure sustainable development practices in the region.
