“Canada Invests $14.3M in Green Shipping for PEI Port”

The Canadian government has allocated $14.3 million towards eco-friendly shipping initiatives in Prince Edward Island, with a notable project enabling ships to connect to the island’s power grid while docked at Port Charlottetown. This innovative setup allows vessels to power their onboard systems without running their engines, contributing to a reduction in emissions.

Funding for this endeavor comes from Ottawa as part of the Green Shipping Corridor Program, aimed at establishing emission-free maritime routes between multiple ports across Canada. Federal Transportation Minister Steven MacKinnon highlighted the positive impact on the local economy, particularly in the tourism sector. Cruise lines are increasingly seeking sustainable infrastructure like this to reduce their environmental footprint and attract more vessels to the region.

Canada, along with 26 other nations, signed the Clydebank Declaration in 2021, committing to establishing six green corridors by the mid-2020s. Subsequently, G7 countries raised the target to 14 corridors. The Canadian government initiated the Green Shipping Corridor Program in 2023, allocating $149.7 million over five years for clean port infrastructure and vessel testing.

Port Charlottetown CEO Mike Cochrane emphasized the importance of this investment in advancing the cruise industry’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The upgrade in infrastructure benefits both the port and Maritime Electric, enhancing their capabilities to support sustainable operations. Maritime Electric confirmed that the shore power implementation will not strain the island’s power grid, as peak demand aligns with off-peak cruise season periods.

The timeline aims to have the upgraded port operational by fall 2029, with construction slated to commence within the next six to nine months. This development underscores a significant step towards a greener maritime industry and a more sustainable future for Prince Edward Island.
