“Neighbourly Homes Project Offers Safe Haven in Fredericton”

A new housing project on Forest Hill Road in Fredericton is nearing completion, with some residents already moving into their new accommodations. The Neighbourly Homes project, led by the non-profit organization 12 Neighbours, consists of two courtyards offering a total of 27 single-person units.

Marcel LeBrun, the founder of 12 Neighbours and the driving force behind the Neighbourly Homes project, mentioned that 13 individuals have settled in the first courtyard, while the second courtyard with 14 units is still being finalized. The aim is to provide residents with their own modular units equipped with essential amenities like a bed, desk, power, internet access, and a secure lockable door.

The project distinguishes itself from the 12 Neighbours community by offering individual living spaces and shared communal services such as bathrooms, showers, a kitchen area, storage facilities, and a laundry room. The emphasis is on fostering a sense of ownership and autonomy for residents, unlike traditional homeless interventions that may impose restrictions like curfews or mandatory participation in programs.

In addition to housing, residents receive support services including daily meal deliveries, access to public transportation, and on-site breakfast provision. Counseling and addiction services are available on an optional basis, with a mobile health team offering assistance to residents. LeBrun stressed the importance of stabilizing individuals before offering recovery services, emphasizing a supportive and inclusive approach.

Residents are also expected to adhere to a “good neighbor policy” promoting mutual respect, with repercussions for any violations. Mike Sewell, the site manager, has reported a smooth transition for residents in the early days, with everyone showing politeness and cooperation as they settle into their new homes.

The selection process for residents involves collaboration with social development agencies and homeless shelters to identify individuals who would benefit most from the housing initiative. Despite initial criticism and concerns from the community, LeBrun noted that no opposition has surfaced since residents moved in. He remains optimistic about the project’s success, drawing on positive experiences from similar initiatives in Saint John.

Looking ahead, LeBrun hopes that the Fredericton community will embrace the project and potentially offer support as it continues to provide a safe and supportive environment for those in need.
