The Liberal Party revealed on Saturday that Dr. Danielle Martin, a family physician and chair of the department of family and community medicine at the University of Toronto, will be their candidate in the upcoming federal byelection in University-Rosedale, the downtown Toronto riding previously held by Chrystia Freeland. Martin gained recognition in 2014 for defending Canada’s health care system before a U.S. Senate committee.
Described as a strong advocate for constituents, Martin is poised to collaborate with Mark Carney and the Liberal team to bolster the economy, safeguard essential programs, and provide Canadians with more affordable living expenses and increased opportunities for advancement.
The byelection in University-Rosedale was triggered by Freeland’s resignation earlier this month to assume an advisory position with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Freeland, a prominent critic of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the first female finance minister in Canada, represented the area since 2015, succeeding the riding she initially won in 2013.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has yet to schedule the byelection, but according to Elections Canada, he must announce the date between January 20 and July 8, 2026, with the earliest possible date being March 2, 2026.
