Oliver Jones, a renowned figure in Canadian music, has passed away at the age of 91. He had a remarkable career that spanned nearly nine decades, contributing significantly to Montreal’s global recognition as a jazz hub. Jones, a prodigy from childhood, began performing at the age of five, marking the start of many milestones in his journey as a pianist and composer.
One of his notable associations was with the Montreal Jazz Festival, where he graced the stage annually from 1981 to 1999. In May 2023, Jones received the honor of being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, which he humbly described as a dream come true during an interview with CBC Montreal.
Throughout his career, the Montreal-born artist garnered accolades such as two Juno Awards, multiple Félix awards, and six honorary doctorates. In 1990, he was honored with the Montreal Jazz Festival’s prestigious Oscar Peterson award, named after his idol, the jazz legend. Jones also received several prestigious titles, including an officer of the Order of Canada, a knight of the Ordre national de Québec, and a commander of the Order of Montreal.
Growing up in Montreal’s Little Burgundy neighborhood, known for its jazz heritage, Jones was exposed to music at a young age. Under the guidance of Daisy Peterson Sweeney, sister of Oscar Peterson, Jones honed his skills and developed a deep passion for jazz. Despite exploring calypso music for a period, Jones ultimately returned to his true love, jazz, and released over 20 albums in a three-decade partnership with Justin Time Records.
Jones’s performances took him around the globe, showcasing his talent in countries like New Zealand, Japan, and Nigeria. However, he always treasured performing in his hometown of Montreal, emphasizing the special significance of playing there.
