In April, Canadians witnessed Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen making history by participating in the Artemis II mission, venturing further into space than any human before as he circled the moon with three NASA astronauts. The mission marked a significant step towards NASA’s plan to land humans on the moon in 2028 during the Artemis IV mission.
Unlike the Apollo program of the 1960s and ’70s, NASA’s Artemis program is a global collaboration, with 68 countries currently signatories of the Artemis Accords. The goal is not just a brief visit but a long-term presence on the moon, requiring infrastructure such as construction vehicles, surface transportation, surveillance cameras, and power sources.
Canada is actively contributing to the mission’s success, with Canadian technology already involved in lunar initiatives. While the Canadian Space Agency canceled a small lunar rover in March, plans for a larger lunar utility vehicle scheduled for no earlier than 2033 are underway. Three Canadian companies, including MDA Space, Canadensys Aerospace, and Mission Control, are competing to secure the final contract for the lunar vehicle.
NASA recently announced the Moon Base project near the lunar south pole as an alternative to the Lunar Gateway space station, aiming to establish a sustainable living and working space on the moon. The construction will progress through three phases, with commercial partners providing rovers and landers for the project.
Canadian companies like Canadensys and Mission Control have already contributed to lunar missions with cameras and technology, positioning Canada as a significant player in lunar operations. The Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation (CSMC) is developing a low-enriched uranium nuclear reactor for lunar power needs, which could also have applications on Earth in remote areas.
The utilization of nuclear power is crucial for long-term lunar operations, and Canada’s expertise in space robotics and technology makes it well-suited for lunar endeavors. With opportunities in mining, robotics, and other sectors on the moon, Canadian companies have the chance to make substantial contributions to space exploration. The unique position Canada holds in the space industry presents a valuable opportunity to advance technological innovation and further global space exploration efforts.
