A surge in beaver sightings is causing concern for Kevin Arey, who recalls a time when encountering these creatures was a novelty in the Inuvialuit region. However, the abundance of beavers in the area has become a common sight, prompting Arey, an Imaryuk Monitor dedicated to safeguarding the environment in the N.W.T.’s Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway, to raise alarm.
Arey notes a significant rise in the beaver population, with sightings of beavers even venturing into saltwater, an unusual behavior for these freshwater animals. Their presence and the dams they construct are disrupting the traditional travel routes and activities like fishing and hunting that are vital for the community’s livelihood.
This escalating beaver presence aligns with findings from a recent study published in the journal Ecosphere, which reveals a pattern of beaver expansion in the Arctic region since 2008. The research, led by Helen Wheeler, an associate professor at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, attributes this phenomenon to factors like climate change and the proliferation of shrubs that beavers use for dam construction.
By examining the growth rings of shrubs, researchers can determine the historical presence of beavers in specific areas, shedding light on their past behavior. Satellite imagery analysis has also been instrumental in tracking changes in surface water levels caused by beaver activity, such as the creation of dams that alter water flow and impact travel routes, permafrost, and local ecosystems.
Arey emphasizes the urgency of addressing the growing beaver population, advocating for collaborative efforts between the Inuvialuit Settlement Area and the Gwich’in Settlement Area to protect their shared lands for future generations. While data collection is crucial for understanding the issue, Arey stresses the need for practical solutions and collective action to mitigate the impacts of beaver proliferation on the region’s ecology and way of life.
