“Analog Film Resurgence: Young Audiences Embrace Celluloid Charm”

Jaime Rebanal is deeply passionate about analog film, immersing himself in celluloid movie screenings in Toronto, sometimes attending multiple showings in a day. Despite growing up in a digital-dominated era, the 27-year-old filmmaker finds himself captivated by the nuances of film, emphasizing the intricate details that are more pronounced on film compared to digital formats.

Speaking at an event at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Lightbox, which featured a retrospective on director Christopher Nolan ahead of his latest film release, Rebanal expressed his admiration for the unique experience of viewing films on celluloid. Contrary to common stereotypes about today’s youth, some young people are leading a resurgence in analog film appreciation at movie theaters, seeking immersive and communal experiences that cannot be replicated online or at home.

Imax, renowned for its expansive screens and immersive audio, exemplifies this trend. “The Odyssey” marks the first narrative feature entirely shot on 70-mm Imax film, drawing a significant interest from young audiences who associate the brand with quality, according to Mark Welton, global president at Imax Theatres.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent disruptions in the entertainment industry led to a renewed focus on attracting audiences back to theaters. Young people, in particular, have emerged as key moviegoers, with 85% of Canadians under 35 being regular attendees, as per a 2025 Telefilm Canada report.

Analog film screenings have also seen a resurgence, with a noticeable presence of younger viewers. Janine Marchessault, a professor at York University, highlighted the growing interest among Gen-Z in the materiality and capabilities of film as a medium, driven by a desire for high-quality visuals and sound.

Despite the industry’s shift towards digital formats for cost and convenience reasons, the unmatched resolution of large-format analog film continues to captivate audiences. Unlike digital formats, analog film’s unique grain pattern, created by crystals rather than pixels, adds a distinctive charm to each shot.

The communal aspect of watching movies holds significant appeal for a generation that has experienced lockdowns and isolation, fostering a desire for authentic and shared experiences. Social media platforms have played a crucial role in educating young audiences about technical aspects of film formats, providing valuable insights and fostering a deeper appreciation for analog film.

Through engaging content and educational initiatives, filmmakers like Ryan Coogler have successfully demystified film formats, garnering widespread interest and understanding among audiences. The allure of analog film extends beyond technical specifications, with many viewers expressing near-reverential admiration for its unique ability to evoke memories and emotions distinct from digital experiences.

In conclusion, the resurgence of analog film among younger audiences signifies a broader cultural shift towards appreciating the tangible and authentic qualities of traditional media formats, enriching the cinematic experience for a new generation of cinephiles.
