Canadian Armed Forces Gunner Dies in Latvia Mission

A member of the Canadian Armed Forces passed away during a mission in Latvia, as confirmed by the Department of National Defence. Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, hailing from Hamilton, lost his life near Riga, Latvia’s capital, on Thursday. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.

The Department of National Defence stated that the incident does not currently pose an elevated risk to deployed personnel’s safety. Details regarding Halmagean’s cause of death have not been disclosed.

Canadian Forces are stationed in Latvia as part of Operation Reassurance, the Canadian Armed Forces’ primary international operation. Halmagean, who served in the military for nearly three years, was based at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick, according to a social media post by the Canadian Armed Forces.

Local Member of Parliament David Myles expressed condolences, recognizing the sacrifices military members make daily. General Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, conveyed sympathies on behalf of all members for the loss of Gunner Halmagean.

Prime Minister Mark Carney also mourned the loss, offering thoughts for Halmagean’s family, friends, and comrades. Latvia hosts a multinational troop deployment aiming to deter Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. It houses several NATO battle brigades, with Canada leading the mission in Latvia.

Latvia shares land borders with NATO allies Estonia and Lithuania, as well as Belarus and Russia. Prime Minister Carney previously announced the extension of Operation Reassurance until 2029, highlighting Canada’s continued commitment to the mission.
